Empowering Youth to Support Each Other

Teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) is an evidence-based training program that teaches teens how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges in their friends and peers.

At Youth Infusion, this training supports our mission to empower youth through leadership, service, and mental wellness.

How We Offer tMHFA

Teen Mental Health First Aid is embedded within Youth Infusion’s F.A.C.E.S. Curriculum (Focused Action & Change through Education and Service) as part of the Youth Leadership Advisory Board (YLAB) Program.

In addition, Youth Infusion partners with schools, school districts, and youth-serving organizations to deliver this training directly to the youth they serve, expanding access to essential mental health education across our communities.

Why This Training Matters

Teens often turn to their peers first when facing challenges. This training equips young people with the knowledge and skills to support one another while understanding the importance of involving a trusted adult.

Program Purpose and Learning Objectives

This training prepares students to be informed, supportive, and proactive peers.

Participants will learn how to:

• Recognize early warning signs of mental health challenges
  Identify signs of a mental health crisis 
• Start a supportive conversation with a friend 
• Encourage seeking help from a trusted adult 
• Access appropriate resources and support systems 
• Apply the tMHFA Action Plan: Look, Ask, Listen, Help Your Friend
   

What the Training Covers

• Mental health basics and common challenges 
• Suicide awareness and crisis response 
• The impact of bullying, trauma, and violence 
• Substance use awareness 
• Peer support and communication skills 
• Recovery and resilience
   

Who Can Participate

This training is designed for: 

• High school students (Grades 10–12)
• Youth ages 15–18 

Training Format and Commitment

Youth Infusion delivers tMHFA in a structured format to ensure certification.

Three required sessions:

• Session 1  (90 minutes)
• Session 2  (90 minutes)
• Session 3  (90 minutes) 

All three sessions must be completed in full to receive certification. If a session is missed, a make-up session will be required.

Safety and Support - Youth safety is a priority throughout the training

• A mental health professional is available during sessions
  Students have opportunities to request support and follow-up
  Parents and guardians are informed and included 
• Clear protocols are in place to respond to any student in need
